Resolved Question: How to tie-down and transport two kayaks using "J Cradles" on roof rack carrier.?

I am using aftermarket Yakima crossbars and Swiss Cargo 3 in 1 "j cradle" to carry 2 kayaks. The "j cradles" are on either side of an upright cradle. It basically looks like this ( J I L ) the "L" should be another "J". if you can imagine in between the ( ). It is a two kayak carrier. Anyway, I am wondering if the kayaks should fit snug up against the middle piece or if they should fit more towards the end of the "j" on the rubber mats. If they are snug up against the middle piece it seems like they would be more likely to tip over but if they are more on the end, then there is a space between the kayak and the lower part of the "J". I am hoping that i am explaining this thoroughly. It would be much easier if I had pictures, but if you use these cradles and transport more than one kayak, you should know exactly what I am talking about. Here is the website for the manual of my rack but it doesnt explain the best way to keep them snug. http://swisscargoboxes.com/PDF/SC-KJ02.pdf

Resolved Question: How does cargo insurance work?

Specifically, who "owns" it? With vehicle insurance, it is the vehicle that is insured, not the driver; i.e., if I have two or more vehicles, I have to insure each of them. What about cargo insurance? Do I have to insure the contents of each of my theoretical semi-trucks, or do I purchase cargo insurance once, and it will protect my cargo regardless of how it is being transported? I assume I don't have to receive insurance for each "load", but it's like a yearly renewal thing? I know the premium depends on the type of materials being transported (hazardous or not), but does it also depend on weight, or frequency delivered, or what?

Voting Question: Looking for a van/SUV that will hold large dog crates?

I'm looking for a van, crossover, or SUV that will hold 2 big dog crates (21" wide, 36" long, 28" tall) behind the second row of seats. I don't need a third row of seats...if it has them, then fold-flat would be necessary. Fold flat or the stow-n-go type 2nd row would be a bonus. I don't care about rear DVD systems, etc., as I don't have rear passengers that often and no kids. Rear A/C would be necessary, though to keep the dogs chilly. I participate in dog sports, and do rescue transport. I like the plastic rear interior as opposed to carpet, but will make it work for the right vehicle. The Element looked good, but I don't think it has quite the room I need. The Ford Transit Connect is another possibility, but I don't think it has rear A/C. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have looked extensively online, and the cargo capacity is always listed in volume, which doesn't help me that much. I'd like to receive an idea of what to look for before I break out the tape measure at the lots. Thanks!!!! Probably finding a van would be best. Would adore something not too expensive (below 20k), new or used (lower if used)

Resolved Question: Why not use solar powered airships?

Just watching the news about the solar power aeroplane. Nice idea, but would a solar airship not do a better job at lifting and transporting cargo? Helium would be safe and the big surface area of the envelope could capture a lot of power. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/10550430.stm Well they could either put on a conventional motor, or bob around till it cleared up. Typical speed of a cargo boat = about 20kts (23mph) The Bullet 580 (current big airship) = 80mph http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/36967360 Hindenburg was full of hydrogen and also the doping on the outer shell was unwittingly made from iron oxide and aluminium - which are the major part of some solid fuel rockets. I think we learned from that disaster.

Resolved Question: what are your views on this pious act of menachem begin ? [details inside]?

On June 10, 1977, an Israeli cargo boat en route to Japan crossed paths with a boat full of 66 Vietnamese. They were out of food and water, were extremely lost and scared, and their boat was leaking. Their SOS signals had gone ignored by passing East German, Norwegian, Japanese, and Panamanian boats. The Israeli captain and crew immediately offered food and water and decided to bring the passengers on board and transported them to Israel. There, Prime Minister Menachem start authorized their Israeli citizenship, comparing their situation to the plight of Jewish refugees seeking a haven during the Holocaust. . It was a natural act to us,We remembered, we have never forgotten, the boat with 900 Jews having left Germany in the last weeks before the Second World War… traveling from harbor to harbor, from country to country, crying out for refuge. They were refused...Therefore it was natural that my first act as prime minister was to give those people a haven in the land of Israel.

Resolved Question: What is the cheapest way to travel to europe or asia?

Basically, I am a student who is taking the year off from school and will work in the meantime. Soon, I'll have quite a bit of money. With that, I would like to travel. I'd like to travel to Jordan, France, Italy, India, Cambodia, Laos, and Nepal. Also I want to travel to South America, but I think I may keep that for another time. Either way, S.Am. or Eurasia, I'd like to receive out of the US. What is the cheapest way to do this? Just initial flights/cargo ships out. I've got places to stay and food obligations covered, just need help with figuring out the cheapest way to transport around. Thanks! I've looked at a few 'around the world' packages, but they're a little expensive. I've found that as soon as I can receive out of the US I can find cheaper ways to receive around (like Ryanair and Tigerair) rather than sticking with one company. Where is the cheapest place to receive to and to live in? (it's okay if they're two separate places)

Resolved Question: Should i snitch on a cheater?

I tried so difficult for my Ancient Rome economy essay ( 13 years old) and my social studies teacher said it was good but she reduced my marks because she assumed i copied and pasted. Now, another girl in my class who did copy and glue, ( which i saw and she admitted openly) got a higher mark than me. Should i tell the teacher for what she has done? I got 17/20 and i know i should be glad with this but it doesnt feel right because it wasnt her possess. If it was i wouldnt compare at every. She got 19/20. This is my assignment ( dont have to read it ! LOL) The economy of the early Republic was primarily focused on farming and trading. Agricultural trading developed in Italy and by the 1st Century BC a diversity of olives and grapes was produced. While North Africa supplied a variety of grains the Roman’s main exports were olive oil and wine. Ancient Rome was a slave based society whose main concern was to feed the immense population of citizens. Farmers donated financial tax to the government allowing both the Republican and Imperial leaders to gain popularity as well as being able to feed the people at no monetary cost. Unfortunately this left the farmers with little incentive to produce more crops as producing more crops translated to paying more taxes. While the transportation of foods controlled the trading production there was also a vast exchange of other goods including farm products, livestock, silk from China, wild animals from Africa and many more from every parts of Europe, Asia and Africa. The currency of the Republic consisted of coins including the aureus, (gold) denarius, (silver) sestertius (bronze) and dupondius (copper). They were used from approximately the middle of the third century BC until the third century AD. The coins circulated throughout the Empire and even beyond – some being found in India. The value of a single, copper coin was equivalent to a pound of copper only weighing less. The imagery of the coins only became of an importance when Julius Caesar beared his possess portrait on coins. Julius was the first living individual to have his portrait issued on the coins, prior to that, it was with the portraits of ancestors. The exact reason the Roman coinage system debased constantly is unknown but common theories involve trading with India. The largest industry in Ancient Rome was mining, which provided big stones for big building developments, weapons and tools that conquered the ancient west. Italy provided marble for the structures. Cities and towns established pottery, glassware, weapons, tools and jewellery. For military and transportations use, the Romans became skilled at constructing roads. They were necessary for their empire, as roads allowed the army to move rapidly, as well as transporting cattle and vehicles. The roads expanded to over 400,000km over the years, were created such as; vehicles were forbidden in urban areas except for the exception of married women and business men. Trade by land was only convenient if good were being transported in short distances, sometimes hauled by labour slaves. Most big goods such as foods, metals, rock and building supplies were shipped. The Roman navy, below Augustus was in threat as the severe weather, imprecise charts and bad navigation equipment could wreck on the voyage. Yet, despite the dangers, there was no better way trading cargo than by sea. The foundation of slavery in Ancient Rome covered up to 20% of the entire population (no less than 53,000 people). Those held in this position were less of a person in the legal system and weren’t entitled to marry. A slave’s price varied on their capability and skills. For example a slave trained in medicine was worth 50 agricultural slaves. They were the property of their owners and they yearned for freedom and escape. By the tardy republic the economy was reliant on slaves for both skilled and unskilled. Free citizens of Ancient Rome were divided into two classes; Patricians and Plebeians. These two classes were forbidden to intermarry and were categorized into their groups since birth. Although not impossible, it was highly difficult for the lower class to emerge into the higher social class. The distinction between the two classes was mainly based on wealth. The man in the family ‘owned’ his family, kids and slaves just as he owned his swords and was entitled to control them as he wished. Women gained respect from their husbands or son. PATRICIANS: •These family groups claimed to be related to the ancestors (Romulus himself). •Sewed a purple stripe down their tunics to show their significance. •big land owners. •big banquets for dinner. •Wealthy higher class. •Each family member obtains individual rooms. PLEBIANS: •Working class of Rome. •Lived in tiny apartment houses. •No bathrooms – used pots that were thrown out of the window. •Cooked meals in public ovens •On

Resolved Question: Lufthansa's Carry On Baggage?

I will be traveling from Boston to Frankfurt, Germany. The website says the following: Each piece of hand baggage may not be larger than 55 x 40 x 20 cm and may not weigh more than 8 kg. An exception are foldable garment bags. They count as hand baggage up to a size of 57 x 54 x 15 cm. Pieces of baggage exceeding these limits have to be checked in. As the stowage space in the cabin is limited we will transport them in the cargo hold. This is in the interests of your possess and other passengers' safety and comfort. Does this mean that my carry on CAN be over 8 kg and will just be gate checked? Do they really weigh the carry on luggage? My dimensions are correct, but I would like to bring a lot of books on my carry on since my clothing takes up the fill 50lbs in my checked baggage. So do they not weigh your carry on luggage bag?

Resolved Question: What do you think what Federal, State, and local law enforcement officials are witnessing?

Federal, State, and local law enforcement officials are witnessing a growing nexus between the Mexican drug cartels, illegal alien smuggling rings, and U.S. based gangs. The human smuggling networks that operate along the Southwest border cannot move their human cargo through drug cartel controlled corridors without paying a fee. The typical Mexican illegal alien now pays approximately $1,200 to $2,500. For aliens from countries other than Mexico this price is often considerably higher, and may even be more alluring for the cartels. Foreign nationals are often charged an exorbitantly higher fee ranging anywhere from $45,000 to $60,000 per person. Indeed, it is estimated that human smuggling through Mexico into the United States each year puts billions of dollars into criminal hands According to U.S. law enforcement officials, tremendous incentive exists for drug cartels to diversify their criminal enterprises to include the human smuggling trade. Human smuggling can be more lucrative than the illicit drug trade and the benefits far outweigh the risks for the cartels. There are many reasons for this. Law enforcement is dealing with a different type of commodity – drugs don’t hide themselves as humans are able. Consequently, smugglers can transport big numbers of illegal aliens across the border at one time and meet with some success. Moreover, prosecutions for human smuggling are abysmally low. Typically, groups of illegal aliens apprehended attempting to cross the border will not identify the smuggler in the group. For those smugglers that are identified and captured, most are simply returned to their country of origin. Thus, there is a revolving door for the smugglers. Since it is unlikely the smuggler will be prosecuted he or she can opt for voluntary removal, face no criminal penalties and smuggle again. As human smugglers charge anywhere from $2,000 to $60,000 per alien and face little or no consequences if caught, human smuggling is a far less risky business endeavor than the drug trade. Federal law enforcement officials also report that the cartels are not only increasingly engaged in the human smuggling business, they are also actively coordinating with existing human smuggling rings, using diversionary tactics to protect their loads. It is not uncommon for cartels to facilitate the crossing of fifty or more illegal aliens across the U.S.-Mexico border to divert Border Patrol resources away from an area they plan to transport big amounts of drugs across. http://www.davickservices.com/Line_In_Sand3.htm

Resolved Question: Keep the gas guzzler, wait for an expensive hybrid, or find cheap personal alternatives?

Gasoline prices are high and going higher in the US. Those of us who steer 20 year old automobiles probably aren't going to be able to afford whatever the industry offers to reduce gasoline consumption but costs a couple of years of income. There's a guy in Albuquerque, New Mexico drives around on a riding lawnmower. Lots of people are using old motor scooters, golf carts even converted 4-wheelers for local transport. Some are converting fat sleepy bicycles to motorized with DIY kits. Kawasaki's making an item called the 'Mule' that's a tiny cargo/utility transport that might be made road legal by conversion. http://practicalaction.org/docs/technical_information_service/bicycle_trailers.pdf Is there still a place in this country for innovation to help resolve air pollution, traffic jams, economical transportation, and maybe create some cottage industries and jobs US citizens can do solving it instead of inventing hybrids we can't afford and importing them? Yeah, Department of Transportation Regulations forbid solutions without proven safety records. But times have changed and I think maybe Ralph Nader died somewhere back there. Can the juggling act of regulatory and safety priorities be waived to allow some home grown solutions?

Resolved Question: Transport Business in Canada?

I want a sincere opinion on the transport business in Canada on someone who may have potential experience in this area. I am currently based in Dubai doing Transportation business with 40 ft containerised and loose cargo vehicles and was told that similar truck/trailer combination would cost on average 100,000 Canadian Dollars to purchase and could generate a net profit of 3,000 Canadian Dollars after paying gas, driver's salary and other expenses including maintenance, etc. I was given this information by a close pal based in Canada and don't know how far it is accurate as it is a very vague number. Anyone with experience in this field in Canada? Also, what is the current status and what nice of income can be generated from this nice of business? Please let me know your opinions and feedback.

Resolved Question: If it was legitimate, shouldn't the cargo of the Mavi Marmara have met international safety standards?

The equipment that arrived in the IHH Hamas-sponsored blockade-busting cargo ships did not have proper transport manifests or any of the paperwork required to legally boat cargo by sea. The cargo was found to contain construction equipment, including sacks of concrete and metal rods products that are restricted from entering into the Gaza strip for fear that they would be used to construct fortifications for terrorists and for weapons manufacture. In a statement to reporters at the port on Tuesday, Colonel Moshe Levi, commander of the IDF’s Gaza Strip Coordination and Liaison Administration (CLA), said that (apart from the materials noted over), none of the equipment found on board the three cargo ships was in shortage in Gaza. http://www.jpost.com/Israel/Article.aspx?ID=177165 Is it therefore possible that as Pro-Palestinian activist Hussein Ibish stated “The whole point of the ‘Gaza flotilla’ was to receive a reaction out of Israel; Israeli officials described it as ‘a provocation’ and I’m not sure that was entirely incorrect: Like every other acts of civil disobedience, it was designed to provoke a response.” NB If you click on the link over, you can watch the unloading of the ships onto trucks plus look videos & pics of some of the weapons that were on board. Just picked up this news: Israel; “global jihad linked to flotilla” June 2, 2010 - 3:35 AM | by: Dana Lewis http://liveshots.blogs.foxnews.com/2010/06/02/israel-global-jihad-linked-to-flotilla/ Melanie b Take a look at these pics of daily life in Gaza as a result of the Egyptian / Israeli 'blockade'. They are from an Arabic website - I have a Google Translate toolbar, so I could read the captions, but you receive the idea, without. Does it look like there are shortages? http://www.paltoday.ps/arabic/News-64161.html http://www.paltoday.ps/arabic/News-49213.html http://www.paltoday.ps/arabic/News-81655.html http://www.paltoday.ps/arabic/News-81517.html http://www.paltoday.ps/arabic/News-33306.html http://www.paltoday.ps/arabic/News-78592.html Sammar If it had been inspected by a legitimate authority, then it would have adhered to basic International safety standards. BTW Do you think that the inspection of the cargo would have ben any more straightforward once it docked in Gaza? In addition, pursuant to the Oslo Accords signed between Israel and the Palestinian Liberation Organisation in 1993, the Palestinian Authority was set up as an interim administrative body to govern Palestinian population centers, with Israel maintaining control of Gaza Strip's airspace, some of its land borders and territorial waters, until a final agreement could be reached. To this day, no agreement can be reached because of the intransigence of Hamas.. Sassy I'm not surprised you are confused: According to the Guardian, smuggling has become “a lucrative and entrenched part of the [Gazan]economy.” Omar Shaban, a Gaza economist, estimated that smuggling ... is worth around $30-$40 million a month. The tunnels, he said, were “integrated into the economy. We have a new economic structure now, a new business community.” ...According to the Independent, there are an estimated 6,000 workers in the industry. The profit from each tunnel is estimated at $30-$50,000 a month. ....An operational tunnel, according to the Independent, can be bought or sold for up to $150,000. [Nevertheless] The European Union said ....it will provide 3 million euro (£2.9 million) in urgent humanitarian aid for Palestinians in the Gaza area. http://www.terrorism-info.org.il/malam_m…

Resolved Question: Did anyone know the following?

Manure... An interesting fact Manure: In the 16th and 17th centuries, everything had to be transported by boat and it was also before the invention of commercial fertilizers, so big shipments of manure were quite common. It was shipped dry, because in dry form it weighed a lot less than when wet, but once water (at sea) hit it, not only did it become heavier, but the process of fermentation began again, of which a by product is methane gas of course. As the stuff was stored below decks in bundles you can look what could (and did) happen. Methane began to build up below decks and the first time someone came below at night with a lantern, BOOOOM! Several ships were destroyed in this manner before it was determined just what was happening. After that, the bundles of manure were always stamped with the instruction ' Stow high in transit ' on them, which meant for the sailors to stow it high enough off the lower decks so that any water that came into the hold would not touch this volatile cargo and start the production of methane. Thus evolved the term ' S.H.I.T ' , (Stow High In Transit) which has arrive down through the centuries and is in use to this very day. You probably did not know the true history of this word. Neither did I.

Resolved Question: Moving to Anchorage, Alaska a few questions?

My husband is USAF and we are getting orders to Alaska. We are sort of excited but also very scared as we have only lived in the lower 48 states and have never lived further north than Missouri. We have two pets a cat and a dog and two cars, we know the military will move our home items but the relax of it is a mystery to us. We're just putting feelers out there to receive ideas about what will be easiest for us when the move comes which will be end of Jan beginning of Feb-ish. We will also have a 1 month old baby at this time as well. We'll probably leave one vehicle with a family member and try to simply receive one car to our base but what is involved with that? I've had some of my husbands co-workers say the airforce will pay to transport 1 car and others say no they wont, obviously we don't want to steer the A1 highway in feb it will be to dangerous with a newborn and our inexperience. So we will most likely fly and receive reimbursed. We want to take our pets and the airlines do say they have temp controlled cargo bays but i'm worried about that too.. I have only flown once in my whole life and i was 8 at the time,lol..My husband has flown a lot and so he's used to it but i am freaking out...lol..Can anyone give me some tips or helpful info about what to expect or do to prepare? My husband has asked a few co-workers who have been there and they say it's not a big deal but for someone like me who's never been further north than Missouri its a little daunting. And i absolutely will not leave my animals behind, will it be possible to bring them on the plane in a cargo bay? Also right now our current vehicles are not 4 wheel steer in fact one of them is a 4 cylinder, should we look at investing into a reliable 4 wheel steer truck or something similar? My husband could trade his car in it's fairly new and probably receive a good deal on a truck or something more equipped to handle Alaska but we're not sure when or how to go about that. Like i say we just got the news today and just want to receive some info and look what our options are. PS: I asked a similar question earlier but only got 3 responses one of which was so absurd the person thought anchorage was in Germany,lol..I figure now that its evening time i may receive some slightly better info. Thank you.

Voting Question: After the broadcast of the TV mini-series ROOTS, a reviewer claimed it set in motion "a spiritual questioning"?

.....and self examination. But would that have been as likely if ROOTS had told the truth and admitted that African natives were enslaved by fellow Africans and transported through an African slave distribution system which only sold captives to the Europeans once they got their human cargo to the African coast for transport on ships bound for the Americas? So, was the injustice of slavery alone insufficient for imposing a sense of guilt and spiritual impoverishment -- and it took the added travesty of RACISM to make the issue a SPIRITUAL CONFLICT REQUIRING A NATIONAL SELF EXAMINATION AND REFLECTION? ============================== Ignoring the question doesn't answer it. High inventory means containers are available at ports but higher cost of container storage and low inventory of containers means containers are not available and hence loss of revenue. The inspection time period will start as soon as you sign for receiving the car at your requested address.During every this time eBay will hold the money into a trust account. So, this is not a blind transaction, you can look the car before decided to buy it.If you are satisfied with the car and decide to keep it you inform eBay about this and they will release the money to me. If the car is not as advertised and decide not to keep it eBay will refund you the money, no questions asked, and shipping back the car will be my concern. I think this is more than fair for the both of us.Please take into consideration that I will receive paid only after you receive the car and make sure everything is as agreed. If you agree with these terms and you have the money, send me your full name and the address where you want the car to be delivered to and I will initiate the transaction with eBay. You will receive every the transaction details from them.I will appreciate an answer as soon as possible. Thank you! MSgt. Steve Copeland I need to know that this isn't a scam before i proceed but I feel like it. I need to know if anyone has ever had success using craigslist to buy another car or other big items from another state. Your opinion is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Resolved Question: Military Pilot Question?

It has been my dream sense age 12 to become a pilot. I am not looking to become a fighter pilot, I would much rather do troop-transport or cargo.I am not really sure whether I would like fly something like the C-17 or something like the CH-53. To some that up Im not sure whether planes or helicopters are right for me. The aircraft I have really been looking into include; CH-53 (Sea Stallion, Super Stallion, or any variation) MV-22B Osprey MH-60 Knighthawk (Or any variation of the blackhawk) C-17 Just to sum this up, I have no idea what I would like to fly. *If any pilots are looking at this whether gift or retired, I would really apreciate your input on how you decided.
